Hydrogen Leak Detector-Leak Detection Technology

Hydrogen Leak Detector   Vulkan_Loktrace MGLD.3000

Vulkan Lokring MGLD.3000 Hydrogen Leak Detector -
HVAC, Refrigeration, Automotive and Other Applications

Hydrogen Leak Detection for sniffing applications is being considered by most all companies involved with the manufacture of units and parts of  air conditioners, refrigerators and automotive components. Hydrogen is the smallest molecule (even smaller than helium) and has other properties such as speed through the leak that benefits hydrogen use in sniffer leak detection applications.

Why Hydrogen as a Tracer Gas?

  • First reason for the Vulkan MGLD.30000 would be Cost. The cost of a 5% hydrogen/95% nitrogen mixture (non-combustible) is one-third the cost of helium. When you consider that most tracer gas is released, that is just dollars going up the stack in helium. In most facilities, operational cost savings is an ongoing effort. Many HVAC facilities spend over $100,000 on helium tracer gas.
Need to trim $70,000 from your next budget?

  • Helium Contamination of the leak checking environment is always an obstacle to finding the leak. Helium background slows down the leak checking process costing production time and can send leaking units into the field. Hydrogen atoms move with a much higher velocity and disperse much quicker. Using a 5% hydrogen tracer gas, there is less background than using 100% helium.

  • Leak Pinpointing is also enhanced with the speed of hydrogen. The speed of the hydrogen atom through the leak and quick dispersion once outside the leak, provide a clean detection area to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. No more clouds of gas hiding the actual leak.

  • No High Vacuum Pump found in mass spectrometer leak detectors to worry about in the Vulkan MGLD.3000. The Vulkan  uses a microelectronic sensor to detect hydrogen.

The Vulkan Hydrogen Leak Detector  uses forming gas(5% hydrogen 95% nitrogen), Forming gas in most parts of the country is one-third the cost of helium. Given that most HVAC and Refrigeration applications require 100% helium to be effective to find small leaks, the cost savings are significant. Add to the cost savings the simplicity of the MGLD.3000, and the high costs of finding small leaks is significantly reduced.

The Vulkan MGLD.3000 Hydrogen Leak Detector can find a leak as small as 5 x 10-7 atm cc/s leak (with 5% hydrogen/95% nitrogen mixture). Keep in mind that 5% hydrogen is a non-combustible gas and is labeled green. There is no explosion concerns with 5% mixtures of hydrogen and 95% nitrogen.
