Cryogen free sample cooling using a laboratory cryocooler (also know as a cryostat) can be  either closed cycle cryogenic coolers(cryogen free) , open cycle cryogenic coolers, liquid helium transfer lines and many customer specific cryo-refrigerator systems that operate in the
1.7K to 1000K temperature range.

Open cycle systems can also be provided even through popularity of open cycle systems are declining because of helium   availability.
